Methods to check PF balance
There are two methods to check PF balance. The first one is “with your UAN (Universal Account Number) number” By going through the official website “EPFO” and the second one is without your UAN number.
- With UAN number.
- Without UAN number.
There is only one way to check a PF balance with a UAN number but, there are several ways to check a PF balance without a UAN number. This will become helpful to the employees who have forgotten their UAN numbers.
UAN is a 12-digit unique identification number bestowed on all employees. An employee must have a single UAN number. If you have multiple UAN numbers then delete all of them except the most recent one.
1# With UAN number
The first thing to do to check a PF balance is to ensure that your employer has activated your UAN number. Once your UAN number is activated follow the given below step-wise process to check PF balance.
Step 1: The first step is to go to the official website “epfindia.gov.in“, and go to the “Service” tab.

Step 2: A drop-down menu will appear. Select the “For Employees” option.

Step 3: A new page will pop up on the screen click on the “Member Passbook” option. Which I have given in the below image.

step 4: On the next page you have to sign in by entering your UAN number, and password and also solve the captcha question before you click on the Login button.

Step 5: Next the EPF home page will appear where you can see your name, UAN number, and PAN number. In the below, you can see the member ID option select your member id.

Step 6: Finally you can view your PF balance and there is an option to download the PF balance. If you want to download then you have to simply click on the download option.

2# Without UAN number
As I said before there are several ways to check PF balance without a UAN number. Here I have provided the ways in the given list.
- Through SMS
- Via a missed call
- Going through Umang app
I will describe to you every way to check PF balance one by one. Here we go.
#Check PF balance through SMS
To check PF balance on SMS you have to send an SMS to the number 7738299899 in the text form. The text format should be “EPFOHO UAN ENG“. The last three letters describe the language that you wanted in SMS.
Nowadays there are several languages in which you can receive the SMS like Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Malayalam, English, Hindi, Bengali, and Panjabi. In case you want to get the SMS in another language than English, then use the first three letters of that language. Below hear are the list of text format to get SMS in the language you want.

# Via a missed call
An employee can also check PF balance by giving a missed call to 011-22901406 from the registered mobile number.
Note : Employee Aadhar number, PAN(Permanent account number), and bank details must be linked with the UAN number. If not linked request the employer to link the above details.
# Going through Umang app
Apart from checking the PF balance, you can also file and track Claims. First, you have to download the UMANG app (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance). And then follow the below steps.
Step 1: Open the app and click on the “EPFO” option.

Step 2: Next click on “Employee Centric Services”.

Step 3: And then select the “View Passbook” option. and on the next page enter your UAN number and the one-time password(OTP) sent to your registered mobile number. Finally, you will be able to see the EPF details.

Q1-Is the UAN number and PF number are same?
PF number contains information on PF(Provident Fund) details. UAN is a permanent number eligible for a lifetime. PF number can change when you switch the job.
Q2-Is sharing the UAN number safe?
No, it’s not safe at all. EPFO warned its members against sharing any personal details with others, even if anyone says they are from the representative organization.
